Biography of Frederic Diefenthal

Early Life and Career

Frederic Diefenthal, a French actor, gained fame through his role as the friend of the main character in the "Taxi" film series. However, his filmography extends beyond this series, as he excels in any role he takes on, earning the love of thousands of viewers. Frederic was born in Saint-Mande, France, in the summer of 1968. Although his surname sounds Alsatian, his family is originally from the southwest of the country. In an interview, the actor mentioned how he often visited his grandmother, who lived in a small village in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

In school, Frederic was a good student, and his parents noticed his acting talent from a young age, so they enrolled him in a drama club at the age of 11. He enthusiastically participated in school performances. After graduating from school at the age of 15, Diefenthal decided not to go to college. Instead, he started working as a messenger at a hotel, later becoming an apprentice hairdresser and even trying his hand at cooking. Although these skills did not help him in his career development, they proved useful in his personal life. He became a good cook and developed an understanding of hairstyles and makeup.

Frederic decided to try his hand at acting a little later, enrolling in drama courses at the "Virior" theater. He joined the courses on the advice of a friend who also wanted to pursue an acting career. From the first lessons, Diefenthal felt that theater and cinema were his destiny. At the same time, he understood the competition in show business and was not above taking any role to attract attention, even appearing in television commercials.

Films

Audiences first saw Frederic Diefenthal on screen in the spring of 1991 in the film "Billy" directed by Marcel Bluwal. After appearing in commercials, other directors noticed his talent, which did not bring him popularity among viewers. However, Claude Zidi, a director, paid attention to Diefenthal and invited him to join the cast of the film "Totally Spies." In 1993, he appeared in the film "Nothing Special in Normal People" and had his first major role in the film "Dear France" in 1995. This comedy film with an interesting plot did not gain much popularity, leaving Diefenthal almost unnoticed. However, he did not lose hope and continued to accept offers to participate in various projects. In 1996, he appeared in two films - "A Foolish Love Story" and "Captain Conan," and in 1997, he appeared in a short film called "Le marchand de sable." Gradually learning from the experience of popular actors he worked with, with each new film, Diefenthal showed better results.

The turning point in Frederic's career came after his work in the "Taxi" film series, with the premiere of the first part in 1998 gaining worldwide popularity. The film, directed by Luc Besson, filled with subtle humor and dynamism, grossed $210 million worldwide, four times the production budget. Alongside Diefenthal, the film also featured stars such as Emma Wiklund, Marion Cotillard, and Samy Naceri. The film depicts the life of a young taxi driver in Marseille who upgrades his old car and confidently overtakes other drivers on the city's roads, resulting in an incredible number of chases and fines. Emilien (Frederic Diefenthal) is the second main character of the film. He is an unlucky, clumsy police officer who cannot pass his driving exams. After a confrontation with a taxi driver, he is given a choice - either lose his driver's license or work for the city's police. Following the unprecedented success of the new film, Besson decided to make a sequel. In 2000, audiences had the pleasure of seeing the beloved actor in a new part of the comedy action film. The original cast returned for this film, which not only focused on the main plot of the kidnapping and rescue of the Japanese defense minister but also explored the complicated relationships between the two main characters and their girlfriends. The third part of "Taxi" was released in 2003, and the fourth in 2007. A script was written for the fifth part by Luc Besson, but Gerard Krawczyk took on the direction. All the main actors were replaced, so in 2018, the actor's fans did not see him in the new series of the beloved film.

In between his work on "Taxi," Frederic Diefenthal appeared in other films. He was cast in "Labyrinths" (2003), "A Single Shot" (2004), "The Prompter" (2005), and "Don't Panic" (2006). Later, he was offered leading roles more frequently. His work in the films "Chateaubriand," "The Red Fox," and "Operation Seduction" were highly acclaimed by fans.

In 2012, Russian viewers saw Diefenthal in a coffee commercial, as he became the face of Carte Noire's advertising campaign in Russia and spoke Russian in all the commercials. In recent years, the actor's activity has declined. In 2017, he appeared in the mini-series "The Forest," and in 2018, viewers saw him in the film "Shadows of the Past" in the lead role.
