Biography of Rafe Totengco

Rafe Totengco, born Ramon Felix Totengco in 1968 in the Philippines, is a Filipino designer who has achieved great success in the design of women's handbags, footwear, and small leather goods. However, Totengco has also distinguished himself with his excellent men's bags and accessories. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he received several awards for his innovative design solutions.

Early Life and Career

Rafe Totengco grew up in Bacolod City, Philippines, where he displayed his individuality from an early age. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even made modifications to his school uniform to showcase his creativity. Later, he became a skilled tailor, sewing clothes for himself, his family, and friends. At the age of 15, Totengco dropped out of school to start his own clothing brand called 'Schizo.'

However, he soon realized that he lacked sufficient knowledge about the fashion industry and decided to broaden his horizons by moving to New York. There, he enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology and slowly climbed the career ladder before making a significant breakthrough.

Success and Recognition

Rafe Totengco initially gifted his friends with some of his signature lacquered belts and watch straps. The items were a hit and sold out within a day when he brought them to a boutique. This success led to consistent orders for similar products and handbags reflecting his unique style.

In 1999, Totengco received the "Rising Star" award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. A year later, his designs began to be distributed worldwide through stores, boutiques, and his own commercial website. In 2000, he was honored with the "10 Outstanding Filipinos" award by the President of the Philippines.

Over the years, Totengco's range of products expanded significantly, including women's handbags, footwear, small leather goods, men's bags, and accessories. His handbags have adorned the ensembles of many celebrities, such as Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, Helena Christensen, and more. What sets Totengco's designs apart is not only their originality and hardware but also the use of rare fabrics, such as Filipino rattan.

The monkey is Totengco's signature logo, serving as his talisman and symbolizing the year of his birth.
